Surgical Treatment Options
Most surgery can be done arthroscopically, but in some cases, a better result is achieved with open surgery. Here are some of the surgical procedures for problems of the hand, wrist or elbow:
Bone Fracture Repair
Some hand fractures require surgery to stabilize and align the bones. These fractures usually break through the skin or result from a crushing accident. An orthopaedic surgeon can implant wires, screws, or plates in the broken bone to hold the pieces of the fractured bone in place.
Carpal Tunnel Release
When non-surgical techniques are not sufficient to relieve pain from Carpal tunnel syndrome your physician may perform carpal tunnel release surgery. This involves cutting the ligament pressing on your nerve. Where possible this surgery can be performed using using minimally invasive techniques. In other cases, surgery involves making a larger incision in the palm of your hand over the carpal tunnel and releasing the nerve.
Trigger Finger Release
If swelling of the tendon can not be reduced by medication, a surgery to release the tendon may be necessary. This procedure is a same day surgery that can be done under local anesthetic or regional nerve block. A small (less than 2 cm) incision is made in the skin, and the tight portion of the flexor tendon sheath is released.
