Nonsurgical Treatment Options
At Stamford Hospital we take a conservative approach to treating hand injury and pain—considering all non surgical options first. We take into consideration your personal goals and quality of life and work with you to develop and appropriate course of treatment.
Non surgical options include:
Rest and self care
Many injuries can be resolved by resting your hand, wrist or elbow for two weeks and applying ice several times a day for 20 minutes for the first few days after injury to reduce swelling. (You may need a splint or sling.)
Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatories (NSAIDS
Reducing swelling may resolve the pain associated with your injury and enable you to heal faster. The injury also may respond to a corticosteroid injection. (Your doctor may prescribe stronger painkillers.)
Physical or occupational therapy can restore range of motion and strengthen surrounding muscles. Therapy may include application of pulsed ultrasound as well as using a brace or sling to relieve stress.
