Spinal fusion
Spinal fusion, which often is performed on degenerative disc, is a minimally invasive surgery performed at the Spine Center at Stamford Hospital's Orthopedic Institute. Lumbar fusion is a spinal surgery designed to treat pain associated with conditions such as degenerative disc disease. The surgery involves placing small pieces of bone in front and/or in back of the spine allowing the bone to grow together and fuse, limiting the motion in painful joint or spine segments. While the lumbar spinal fusion procedure spans generations, it is growing in popularity especially among younger clients as it allows for a quick return to active routines and lifestyles.
Stamford Hospital's orthopedic surgeons and neurosurgeons are all fellowship trained and specialize in these complex spinal procedures. We have a focused program with a dedicated team of professionals, including anesthesia, nursing, and therapists to name a few. All of our nurses have completed specialized training in the care of spine patients and several have gone on to achieve the status of Certified Orthopedic Nurse.
Our spine program has been designed to support patients through every aspect of their spine surgery, guided by our clinical care coordinator who guides patients through the entire experience. Our orthopedic surgeons and neurosurgeons work collaboratively to uphold a consistent continuum of care. At the Stamford Hospital Orthopedic Institute the focus is on educating patients about what to expect, beginning with a comprehensive pre-operative consultation that outlines what will happen before, during and after surgery.
Stamford Hospital also has a specialized orthopedic surgery unit where patients critical initial phase of recovery begins. Our nurses are trained to focus on post-operative care of the spine patient, pain management and rehabilitation. On site occupational and physical therapy are also provided. The unit also has a dedicated gym where therapists may work with patients. Following discharge from the hospital, therapy can be continued at the state-of-the-art Tully Health Center, and when patients are ready to resume their regular fitness routines, the medically supervised staff at the Health and Fitness Institute are always available to provide support and expert advice following spinal surgery.
