Spinal Instrumentation

Spinal instrumentation is a surgical procedure that straightens the spine using metal screws, rods, cages, plates or cylinders. It is used to treat instability or deformity in the spine by addressing three issues:

  • Stabilizes the spinal column so that bones can fuse after spinal-fusion surgery.
  • Redistributes stresses on the vertebrae to a wider area.
  • Pulls the spine into proper alignment.

Reconstructive spinal instrumentation involves removing a portion of one or more vertebrae and discs, and then using bone grafts and spinal instrumentation to repair the  the area.  Where this traditionally required several major operations, these can now be done with a minimally invasive approach.
