Artificial Disc Replacement: Neck (Cervical) and Lower Back (Lumbar)

The spinal column is made up of three segments: neck (cervical), chest (thoracic) and lower back (lumbar). Artificial disc replacement can be used in the neck and lower back.

Artificial disc replacement is an alternative to spinal fusion as a surgical treatment to degenerative disc disease (damage and degeneration to the spinal discs that act as cushions between vertebrae). In spinal fusion, the damaged disc is removed (discectomy or microdiscectomy), and the two vertebrae are grafted together. The drawback is diminished flexibility. Artificial disc replacement allows for more movement after surgery. In this minimally invasive surgery, the damaged disc is removed and an artificial one is inserted. The procedure also is reversible, if necessary.

Disc  replacement is not an option for all patients.  Those who have osteoporosis, an infection, inflammation or an allergy to stainless steel should not have disc replacement surgery.
