Spinal Infections

The spine is made up of bones (vertebrae)... discs that cushion the bones... the spinal cord... and the spinal cord's protective covering (dural sac). Any of these may become infected by bacteria or fungus. The most common infections are:

  • Osteomyelitis (infection of the vertebral bone)
  • Discitis (infection of the disc space)
  • Epidural abcess (infection in the space around the dural sac).

What Causes Spinal Infections?

  • Cancer
  • Compromised immune system
  • Diabetes
  • HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus)
  • Intravenous drug use
  • Malnutrition
  • Obesity
  • Organ transplantation
  • Surgery on or around the spine

What Are the Symptoms?

  • Pain at infection site that gradually increases
  • Fever and chills
  • Headache
  • Incision is red, tender and draining
  • Stiff neck

When Should You Seek Treatment?

If you suspect a spinal infection, call your physician as soon as possible.

How Is a Spinal Infection Evaluated?

Your physician will take a blood sample to culture it for bacteria or fungus, along with a culture of the wound site. Other diagnostic tests may include:

  • CT scan (computer tomography)
  • MRI scan (magnetic resonance imaging)
  • Nuclear medicine bone scan
  • X-ray

How Are Spinal Infections Treated?

Spinal infections are treated with antibiotic or antifungal medications. If these fail to clear the infection, surgery may be required to re-open the incision and wash out the wound and remove the diseased tissue.
