Arthroscopy

Arthroscopy, a minimally-invasive diagnostic and treatment procedure, has revolutionized the treatment of orthopedic problems. Arthroscopes are small fiber optic viewing instruments that house a lens, light source and video camera. By inserting this high-tech instrument through a tiny quarter-inch incision, today's orthopedic surgeons can easily examine, diagnose, and treat joint problems that were previously tough to identify. Arthroscopy has dramatically decreased hospital stays and recovery periods.

Stamford Hospital's Orthopedic Institute has highly skilled, specially trained surgeons expert in the use of arthrosopy for most common surgical procedures. In fact, almost xxx% of our surgeries are performed using this method.

Most arthroscopic surgery is done on an outpatient basis, at the Tully Surgery Center, and patients are allowed to go home within hours after the surgery. Recovery time depends on the extent of the surgery and on the individual patient, however some patients resume daily activities and return to work or school within a few days. Athletes and other patients in good physical condition may return to athletic activities within a few weeks, under the care of their physician.

The joints most frequently examined using arthroscopy include the following:

  • Knee
  • Shoulder
  • Elbow
  • Ankle
  • Hip
  • Wrist
