Total Joint Replacement

Commonly Treated Conditions

The most common cause of chronic hip and knee pain and disability is arthritis. Osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and traumatic arthritis are the most common forms.

Osteoarthritis usually occurs after the age of 50 and often in an individual with a family history of arthritis. The cartilage that cushions the bones of the joints softens and wears away. The bones then rub against one another, causing pain and stiffness. Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune disease that causes chronic inflammation of the joints. Rheumatoid arthritis can also cause inflammation of the tissue around the joints, as well as in other organs in the body. This chronic inflammation can damage the cartilage and eventually cause cartilage loss, pain and stiffness. Traumatic arthritis can follow a serious injury.

Patients suffering with chronic hip or knee  pain that interferes with their daily activities may consider a total joint replacement. If more conservative treatment options are not longer effective, your orthopaedic surgeon will assess the need for a total joint replacement, taking into account medical history, lifestyle, physical examination and x-rays of the damaged joint.

Recent improvements in joint replacement surgical techniques and technology have greatly increased the effectiveness of this surgery. At Stamford Hospital our orthopedic surgeons are trained in newest surgical techniques for total joint replacement, including minimally invasive options that allow for quicker post surgical recovery.
