Ankle Tendonitis

Tendinitis (also referred to as tendonitis) is an inflammation of the tendon. Tendinitis of the ankle can involve the Achilles tendon, the posterior tibial tendon, or the peroneal tendon. All forms of tendinitis cause pain, swelling, and tenderness in the tendon area involved.

How Is Ankle Tendonitis Evaluated?

Your doctor will conduct a physical exam by applying pressure and assessing tenderness.

How Is Ankle Tendonitis Treated?

Self Care

Follow the PRINCE treatment model:

  • Protect your ankle with a supportive brace.
  • Rest your ankle.
  • Ice your ankle several times a day for 10 to 20 minutes, until swelling subsides.
  • Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatories (NSAIDs) help with pain relief and swelling reduction.
  • Compression with an elastic compression wrap also helps reduce swelling—but it does not offer support when walking.
  • Elevation. Raise your ankle above the level of your heart to reduce swelling and bruising.

When you return to activity, ease into it slowly. Make sure you warm up before and cool down after exercise. Wear appropriate shoes for the specific activity.

Nonsurgical Treatment

Surgery

Surgery is the very last resort.  The surgeon will remove fibrous tissue and repair tendon tears.
